Broadening Cultural Horizon 19'
Broadening Cultural Horizon
or BCH in short is an intercultural event where students from MC 247 are required to
conduct an event that curates a cultural theme. The first Intercultural Day was
held back in 2016 and in the year of 2019, BCH is the latest iconic cultural
event that was held at Menara SAAS, UITM Shah Alam on the 29th of
April 2019.
BCH aims to celebrate
cultural diversity and invites intercultural communication bases to the public.
Since it is a modernized era, it is important to understand and practice
intercultural communication, as a whole. There were a number activities
conducted on the day such as cultural booths, sharing sessions from speakers of
the industry and also a cultural fashion walk. The concept of BCH is more of
experiencing different cultures in a booth. There were 7 booth stands that
represents different cultures from Japan, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Germany,
Turki and even Korea. Each booth has their own uniqueness in showcasing the
cultures either through foods or costumes, also prototypes of antique objects
that symbolizes a particular culture.
Aside of that, BCH also
consists of an informative sharing session by Dr. Khalik from Heriot Watt
University and Puan Fauziah Sirat from CIESTA 16’. These two prominent speakers
are travelers and they happen to engage in multiple intercultural communication
in a daily basis, thus through their sharing sessions, students, lecturers, as
well as the public who attended had the chance to be a part of their experience.
The final act of BCH will be the “Cultural Fashion Walk” where 15 models were
up on stage to model out the traditional outfits from the 7 countries earlier.
This year's event, every students were required to bring one international friend to BCH and surprisingly it was a success. The event had manage to bring -- international students from all around Shah Alam to BCH in showcasing the cultural diversity that was occurring during the event. There were various international guests invited, such as from China, Germany, Japan and even Thailand. These international students happen to be sojourners who are going through an exchange program in Malaysia.
Over the top, Broadening Cultural Horizon was a success and in hope, the next intercultural day will be a triumph that not just celebrate cultural diversity, instead cherishes the beauty of intercultural itself.
